In 2023, Hugging Face was best known as the GitHub of generative AI - a (mostly) free resource platform hosting thousands of open-source AI models for developers to play with. Now, following the acquisition of Pollen Robotics, they are even offering open-source robots (!) democratizing access to development in this very exciting space. Let’s dig into it.
Focus On: The Convergence of AI and Robotics
Hugging Face was recently on the news with its acquisition of Pollen Robotics, marking a decisive shift from purely software-driven models towards embodied AI: systems that can sense, move, and interact within physical spaces. This alliance is streamlining robotics training pipelines, democratising access to advanced compute, and reducing the engineering burden normally associated with embodied AI.
This development drastically lowers the barrier to entry for robotics development, enabling developers, researchers, and enterprises to experiment and deploy solutions in the real world. It also suggests a future where proprietary robotics solutions may be challenged by more flexible, modular, and community-supported alternatives.
The core of this development is Reachy 2, an open-source humanoid robot designed for maximum expressiveness and versatility. Featuring lifelike Orbita joints for smooth articulation, expressive limb movement, and VR telepresence capabilities, Reachy 2 is a leap in human-machine interaction. Cornell and Carnegie Mellon are already using the robot in embodied AI research, simulating real-world interaction patterns that were previously only theoretical.
For enterprises, the applications could be massive:
